About us:

The Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) is the public entity that has the responsibility to provide ICT infrastructure, systems and services to Government that leverage a modern digital ecosystem and contribute towards the definition and execution of the Government’s digital strategies that sustain a modern digital economy. The Agency is dedicated in assisting the Government in transforming technological innovations into real business solutions. Its unique approach combines an innovative array of ICT and project management services with focused delivery capabilities using tried and tested methodologies to help fulfil Government’s strategies and projects and maximize the benefits of investment in technology.

The Information Security and Governance Department (ISGD) within MITA serves as the digital security consultant for the Government of Malta. This department specifically provides measures to safeguard the Government’s digital assets through a comprehensive risk management approach. ISGD is entrusted to extend this function to international-scale events organized by the Government of Malta. The department collaborates with various national and international bodies to acquire and share the necessary intelligence and serve as the Government Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT). It operates a state-of-the-art digital security facility to identify, protect, detect, respond and recover from security incidents. MITA sits on the National Cyber Security Steering Committee and runs an intensive awareness campaign across different sectors at a national and government level, whilst also collaborating with international entities such as ENISA.

Core team

David Galea works within the Information Security and Governance Department at MITA as a Senior Solutions Architect. He has over seven years of experience in the Information Technology industry.  His background comes from Software Development and recently specialised in the Security domain. Throughout his experience with MITA, David contributed towards the organisation of Cyber and Game-Based learning hackathons. He currently sits on ENISA’s European Cyber Security Challenge Committee, representing Malta. In this role, David already contributed towards the organisation of ECSC 2019 and 2020.

Antoine Debono is an Information Security Specialist within the Information Security and Governance Department at MITA. In his role, Antoine is responsible for information security assessments, information security consultancy and advanced operations. For the past 6 years, Antoine has been involved in various operations including Incident Response activities, Digital Forensics Investigations, Malware Analysis, Red Team Exercises and Threat Intelligence Assignments amongst others.

Joanne Deguara is a Senior Project Leader within the Information Security and Governance Department at MITA. Joanne is involved in the awareness campaigns related to cyber security on a national level and also participates in task forces organised by ENISA in preparation for the Cyber Security Month. Joanne also follows closely the European Regulation establishing the European Cybersecurity Industrial, Technology and Research Competence Centre and the Network of National Coordination Centres.

The Challenge:

The Malta National Cyber Security Challenge aims to identify and recognize local talent between the age of 16 to 25. Participants must have 16 years by the 31st July 2021. This event caters for all levels from Information Security aspirants to Information Security professionals already working in the field. The focus of the event is to instill the culture of information security within youths, to educate and ultimately to have fun. We encourage all those interested to come and experience this unique, enjoyable and challenging event.

There will be 20 unique challenges to be solved in a 24hr hackathon, in a team of 1 to maximum 4 members. We have tasks and activities to keep participants wide-awake and entertained. Participating teams have to solve security related tasks from domains such as web application security, network security, cryptography, exploitation, reverse engineering and forensics, amongst others. So if you enjoy solving challenges, coding, security, IT or just want to test your security knowledge, then the Malta National Cyber Security Challenge is for you. The event will be starting on 31st July 2021 @9am and ending 1st August 2021 @9am followed by a 10-minute presentation from each participating team.  If you finish the challenges before the 24hr timeframe, you are free to leave!

We believe that the experience and knowledge gained will be the greatest prize, but….Yes! we do have a €1000 prize voucher for the winning team!!!!  And even better, 10 participants will be selected to represent Malta in the European Cyber Security Challenge in Prague between 28th September and 1st October 2021.

    if you are one of the shortlisted 16, you will be called for an interview between these dates that will enable further shortlisting to 12 individuals

    if you are one of the selected 12 individuals, then you will be invited to attend a 2hr training session on presentation skills and a visit to MITA security operations center
  • 16th till 20th August 2021
