Hackers stole files from a major law firm and are threatening to release ‘dirty laundry’ on Donald Trump unless they are paid $42 million in ransom within 1 week.
The hacker group called REvil, stole 756 gigabytes of data from one of the top US entertainment law firm Grubman, Shire Meiselas & Sacks. The firm represents huge clients across the entertainment industry, including Lady Gaga, Drake, U2, Elton John, Madonna, Robert De Niro, LeBron James, The Weeknd, and Priyanka Chopra.
The hackers’ cache included contracts, nondisclosure agreements, phone numbers, email addresses, and private correspondence.
In a statement, the law firm said: “Our elections, our government and our personal information are under escalating attacks by foreign cybercriminals. It added that the FBI had told the firm that negotiating with, or paying ransom to terrorists is a violation of federal criminal law.
Last January the same group targeted the UK-based currency-exchange company Travelex, which paid about $2.3 million in bitcoin to get its stolen files back.
