In a world where we are surrounded by news coming in from everywhere, it’s becoming hard to divide between fact and fiction. It’s important to develop a critical mindset to identify what is true and what is a lie.
First and foremost read between the lines. Ask yourself “Why was this article written? Is there an agenda behind it? Is it trying to persuade me of a certain viewpoint or trying to sell me a specific product?”.
Usually, fake or manipulating news comes from sources that were never heard of before or are unpopular. Consider the reputation of the website or Facebook Page that the news is coming from and dig in about the publisher. Is it a respected agency or someone who you’ve never heard of before?
It is also good to cross check with other reliable sources. See if the news that you’re reading on this platform is also reported on others which are known for their reliability and professionalism.
Finally, common sense plays an important role. Remember that fake news is specifically created to “feed you” with incorrect information. Ask yourself… Can this be “too good to be true?”
